Metabolische Landschaft (Metabolic Landscape) – MedUni Campus Mariannengasse, Vienna

Thomas Feuerstein’s artistic intervention refers, at both a literal and metaphorical level, to the research topics addressed at the various medical centres on the campus and connects them with the metabolic processes that are found in the body’s cells and that epitomise artistic development in itself.

Metabolic Landscape is a 30m-long panorama mural located in the campus canteen. It juxtaposes a real topographic map with a diagram of the metabolic pathways in the human body. Four screens installed in front of these images display associative dialogues at short intervals, calling to mind the speech bubbles found in WhatsApp messages or comics. These dialogues are generated by a software application that automatically scans the latest publications from the research centres on campus and translates them into a simple language structure.
