Murals – Medical University of Innsbruck

The institute building of the Medical University of Innsbruck is home to two large-scale pieces of wall art dating back to 1974: one is by Claudius Molling and consists of cast aluminium sheets, and the other is by August Stimpfl and made from fired ceramic panels. Before the comprehensive renovation of the building commenced, both works, which had previously been located in the foyer, needed to be moved to safety. The art forwarding company Museumspartner was commissioned to expertly dismantle and store the works. In 2019 the building’s renovation was completed.

Since the structural changes meant that the works could not return to their original positions, new suitable locations had to be found within the building. In this effort, BIG worked closely with the design-build contractor for the renovation, architect Thomas Gruber, who showed great sensitivity in dealing with the existing building and art.

The two murals were relocated with great success; they are both timeless and impactful as they seamlessly blend in with the modernised university building.
