A project by Mary Maggic with Max Scheidl, Leon Thomas, and Sofia Zorzi
FLORESTANIA IM DRITTEN is a participatory art and environmental project in the new VILLAGE IM DRITTEN district of Vienna, developed by ARE. It invites people of all ages to participate in public workshops in which plastic waste is transformed into a walk-in, poetic forest installation.
The workshops, led by FANTOPLAST and Precious Plastic Vienna, will take place in July and August and will be complemented by guest formats on urban plant collecting, traditional herbal medicine, and ecological regeneration. Together with the artist Mary Maggic, they are creating a space “to reflect on our relationship with waste and connect with our inner landscapes.”
The term Florestania is derived from the Portuguese words for “forest,” floresta, and “belonging” or “civic spirit,” cidadania. It was coined by indigenous Amazonian activist Ailton Krenak, who calls on us to forest our imaginations to heal and protect the Earth.
After an exhibition of the forest installation at DOCKS in VILLAGE IM DRITTEN in September, it will be sold to raise funds for forest conservation initiatives – both local and global. In this way, urban waste is transformed into new alliances for the planet.
WORKSHOPS
The public workshops will take place every Saturday from July 5 to September 6 between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM at the DOCKS in the VILLAGE IM DRITTEN (Landstraßer Gürtel 51, 1030 Vienna). Additional guest workshops will be announced at www.florestania.at and via Social Media.
A BIG ART project in cooperation with ARE Austrian Real Estate and KÖR Art in Public Space Vienna.
