Drei Rehe (Three Fawns) – Europagymnasium Josef-Preis-Allee

The Drei Rehe sculpture ensemble in front of Europagymnasium secondary school in Salzburg was made by Hilde Heger (1899–1998), one of Salzburg’s most renowned artists. As a freelance artist, she worked mainly in Salzburg, where she left her mark on the art scene and created outstanding fountain figures, monuments and busts for public spaces. One of her most famous works is the Papageno fountain, which has been a tourist attraction in Salzburg’s historic centre since 1960. In 1934 Heger was awarded the Austrian State Prize.

Drei Rehe is a trio of sculptures made of hollow cast bronze. Before its restoration in early 2019, one of the fawns was missing a large section of its left hindleg and its head had come loose. The sculpture was also no longer attached to the pedestal. The surface of the entire ensemble was grimy and had some graffiti damage. The pedestal was also extremely weather-worn, had holes and cracks, and large sections were missing.

A new cast iron hindleg was created to make the sculpture complete again, the head was securely reattached and all loose parts were welded. In addition, the entire ensemble and the pedestal were cleaned and missing pieces replaced.
