Die Zelle (The Cell) – Former Vienna Water Quality Authority

107 artists in Kaisermühlen

Die Zelle (The Cell) was the name of the non-commercial association for the promotion of art and culture in public spaces, which was established through the artistic use of the former Water Quality Authority near the Alte Donau in Vienna’s 22nd district. That authority belonged to BIG and became the venue of temporary art projects before finally being demolished in 2009.

For one week in autumn 2009, the former Water Quality Authority, which had been cleared out and vacant for some time, was once again filled with life and ideas and served as the venue for a remarkable group exhibition and creative exchange.

Of the 107 artists who participated, some created works in the more than 60 almost identical rooms, others created installations in the outside area, while others again used the corridors and staircases for their art.
